Mixed Emotions at Soweto Open

Posted by wendz on April 30, 2009

Ø        Bad day in the office for South Africans

There was a lot to talk about as players fought valiantly for quarter-final places in the R1-million Soweto Open women’s ITF tournament at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Complex in this world-renowned slice of South Africa on Thursday.

On a topsy-turvy day that made tennis hard work for the players rather than an opportunity to showcase their top-end skills, the last two South Africans in the singles draw didn’t disappear quietly, while the rest of the cosmopolitan field fared more or less according to form.

SA number one Natalie Grandin started well before succumbing to the swirling wind and on-song Mauritian Marinne Giraud 6-2 3-6 4-6, while her 16-year-old compatriot Christi Potgieter almost unseated fourth seed Anastasija Sevastova in a memorable first set before the Latvian regained her balance and left nothing more than crumbs on the table winning 7-5 6-3. And to cap a modest day for Grandin, the Durbanite and her partner lost their late-afternoon doubles match and with it a berth in the last eight.

For the rest of the fancied few, top seed Katie O’Brien of Great Britain sounded an ominous warning with a comprehensive defeat of flamboyant African American Megan Moulton-Levy 6-3 6-3 while her chief singles rival, the Netherlands’ glamorous Michaella Krajicek saw off a never-say-die Slovakian in Dominika Nociarova 4-6 6-1 6-3.

“I made life difficult for myself,” Krajicek said afterwards. “The second set was good, though, while the third got a bit ’screamy’. I got a bit emotional and so did Dominika, but I’m getting better every day.”

However, the real story Thursday was not about tennis. The talk of the tennis courts was Krajicek’s donation of R20 000 to a Roodepoort home for abused and abandoned animals.

Now playing out of Bradenton Sarasota in Florida, where she trains with her South African coach Allistair McCaw, the 20-year-old Krajicek said her love for dogs in particular began as a toddler at the family home in the Netherlands town of Delft.

“I was dog crazy since I was little,” she said. “I plan to establish a foundation for animals later on. They can’t talk for themselves, so they need us far more than we realise.”

Krajicek related how two days before, former Randburg, Johannesburg resident McCaw has spotted a local newspaper article about the animal shelter and its need for funds and the rest is history.

Getting back to the tennis, sixth seed Kristina Kucova of Slovakia, a player who as yet is not getting the attention her performances deserve, again did justice to her ranking in defeating France’s Anais Laurendon 7-5 6-2. She meets Krajicek in Friday’s quarter-finals and this could be the match-up of the day.

Players taking part in the event are accommodated at the Southern Sun Grayston Hotel, the official tournament accommodation. The Soweto Open is sponsored and hosted by the City of Johannesburg.

Play Friday starts at 11:00. Entrance to the tournament is free of charge.

Netherland’s Michaella Krajicek is pictured cuddling Bobby, one of the dogs rehabilitated at the Friends of Rescued Animals (FORA) shelter. Krajicek is the number 2 seed at the Soweto Open women’s tennis tournament currently underway at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Complex in Soweto. The tennis star showed a good heart by making a R20, 000 donation to the pro-life organisation which accommodates over 500 dogs and 150 cats at its Roodepoort shelter. All pets that are up for adoption are sterilized and micro chipped. The shelter relies on public and donor funding. Soweto Ladies Open – Wednesday Results

SOWETO OPEN SERVES UP SIZZLING WOMEN’S TENNIS

Ø        Grandin and Potgieter score wins, disappointment for other locals

Jabavu, Soweto – The remaining first-round singles encounters in the R1-million ITF Soweto Open women’s tennis tournament produced a host of scintillating match-ups on the sun-baked Arthur Ashe Tennis Complex centre court in the Soweto suburb of Javabu Wednesday.

South African wild card Lizaan du Plessis, daughter of former Springbok centre Willie and now living with the family in Sydney, gave an opponent ranked 400 places above her a torrid time on centre court. African American Megan Moulton-Levy had the shock of seeing her 5-1 lead in the first set turned into a 7-6(7-1) loss before overcoming the 23-year-old South African 6-3 6-3 in second and final sets that completely belied the closeness of the contest.

Indeed, at 3-3 in the second, Du Plessis was well on course for victory, but as she said afterwards, nerves at playing in such a big tournament at this stage of her career set in to her detriment.

The likeable Levy (23) acknowledged she had been teetering on the brink at times. “Rankings do not particularly matter,” she said. “There are so many good players out there who can come out firing on any given day and surprise you. “At 5-1 in the first, I tightened up and it was only really midway through the second that I began to get loose again,” said the compact Levy.

The American, who comes from Michigan but now plays out of Washington and Florida, gets to play London-based top seed Katie O’Brien of Great Britain in the second round Thursday in what promises to be a thrilling match-up.

There was good cheer for South Africa, though, when unseeded Christi Potgieter beat Nicole Clerico of the U.S. 6-7(5-7) 6-4 7-6(12-10) in a titanic struggle that lasted just over three hours.

In more one-sided fare, SA number one, Durban’s Natalie Grandin, was too complete for the Netherlands’ Leonie Mekel, the 28-year-old winning 6-3 6-2 in an hour, while Kelly Anderson had a disappointing match against Austria’s Tina Schiechtl, losing 6-1 6-3.

Going with the intent of slowing the game down by frequently hitting “moon balls” and not coming to the net, Anderson’s strategy met with muted disapproval from her SA Fed Cup captain Greer Leo-Smith (nee Stevens). The former world number seven felt Anderson’s ability to come to the net would have served her better. It was a busy day for Anderson, as in the afternoon, Anderson and singles top seed Katie O’Brien of Great Britain met doubles number ones Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands and Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic in second-round action. The score was 5-7 6-3 12-10 in favour of the top seeds.

Leo-Smith said Anderson and Grandin were a successful doubles combination for the SA team during last weekend’s Euro Africa Group One segment of the Fed Cup tournament in Turkey. SA came close to promotion up the Fed Cup ladder, going down 2-0 to Portugal in their last match.

Players taking part in the event are accommodated at the Southern Sun Grayston Hotel, the official tournament accommodation. The Soweto Open is sponsored and hosted by the City of Johannesburg.

Play on Thursday starts at 11:00. Entrance to the tournament is free of charge.
