Sydwell Mathonsi still on top of his game

Sydwell Mathonsi at World Team CupSouth African number one, Limpopo born Sydwell Mathonsi, ranked number 50 on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) world ranking, has won the 2009 ACSA ITF Wheelchair Tennis South African Open . Mathonsi, who was the strongest contender in the tournament, beat South Africa’s number two Desmond Monyamane in a whitewash match winning 6-1 6-3.

Mathonsi’s mental strength, pace and impressive top spin on the ball all contributed towards him taking the title. Throughout the match Mathonsi had the upper hand over Monyamane who battled to stick to his game plan and struggled to produce the accurate, consistent play that the match demanded. “I felt really confident when I stepped out on the court, luckily for me it paid off and I was able to rise to the moment. Playing Desmond is always challenging and he played well and I am looking forward to facing him in other upcoming tournaments,” says Mathonsi.

Kgothatso Montjane

South African top seed Kgothatso Montjane gained sweet revenge over Colombian Johana Martinez after a 6-2, 6-2 win in the women’’s final of the Acsa Wheelchair Tennis Johannesburg Open over the weekend.

Montjane was gunning for victory after losing to Martinez in the Acsa Mafikeng Open a week earlier, and her quest for revenge saw her produce some of her finest tennis yet.

It was Montjane’’s 19th victory in 18 months, making the South African champion one the most successful wheelchair tennis players in the country.

Playing a strong and consistent game, Montjane completely overpowered Martinez, forcing the Colombian into making too many errors.

Montjane stayed back, playing deep groundstrokes that proved too powerful for Martinez to handle and took just over an hour-and-a-half to romp to the title.
